What is a veranda?

January 21, 2023

Verandas have rapidly gained popularity in the last few years, but what are they?

A veranda, often referred to as a 'patio roof' in Europe, is a fixed structure with a glass roof that is designed to provide sheltered outdoor space, whilst letting sunlight in. Verandas have rapidly gained popularity in the last few years as the contemporary alternative to the conservatory - offering a more cost-effective and customisable fixed solution.

Veranda configurations

At WCS, we designed our modular veranda system to be inherently flexible. With three main configurations – Lean-to, Freestanding Monopitch, and Freestanding Apex, there’s a veranda that fits any application. Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences:

Lean-to Veranda

A Lean-to Veranda is fixed to an existing building or structure

Max width: Unlimited
Max projection: 5m glass, 6m polycarbonate

The Lean-to Veranda is suitable for shelter fixed against existing buildings/structures.

Freestanding Mono-pitch Veranda

A Freestanding Mono-pitch Veranda is a standalone shelter, suitable for medium-sized areas

Max width: Unlimited
Max projection: 5m glass, 6m polycarbonate

The Freestanding Mono-pitch Veranda is suitable for standalone shelter for larger areas, or where the existing building/structure is not suitable for fixing to.

Freestanding Apex Veranda

A Freestanding Apex Veranda is suitable for large standalone shelter

Max width: Unlimited
Max projection: 10m glass, 12m polycarbonate

The Freestanding Apex Veranda is suitable for standalone shelter for large areas. Often found in the hospitality sectors, this configuration is perfect for entertaining large numbers of people.

Built in modularity

Our system comprises of not only the basic veranda structure, but additional modules to upgrade.

Our system is designed to include additional modules and accessories, for increased customisation

Add infill systems around the sides/front – including fixed glass panels, sliding glass doors and solid aluminium panels – all with multiple configurations.

Or include zip screens, veranda roof blinds, or LED lights to add the finishing touch.

Each and every module is tried and tested with our system, and our R&D department is always making improvements to make it easier to install, and easier to use.
